Fox On The Wyoming Caucus

This is yet another example of what is wrong with this Primary process. The media is almost completely ignoring the Wyoming caucus today. But, it is important and we will definitely be covering it. Here is one of the only articles I could find on the caucus.

Fred Thompson Announces Endorsement of Right to Life of Wyoming

McLean, VA - Today Fred Thompson announced the endorsement of Right to Life of Wyoming.

"We're proud to endorse Senator Thompson for president because he has a long track record of supporting pro-life principles," stated Steven Ertelt, President of Right to Life of Wyoming. "Senator Thompson had a 100% pro-life voting record during his tenure in Congress. Today, he supports overturning the Roe v Wade decision which allowed for unlimited abortions, he opposes euthanasia, and he opposes forcing taxpayers to fund scientific research that requires the destruction of human life."

Right to Life of Wyoming (RTLW) is the state affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee which has endorsed Senator Thompson for President, along with 13 other state affiliates.

"I'm blessed and honored to have the endorsement of the Right to Life of Wyoming for President of the United States," said Senator Thompson. "Thirteen right to life organizations from coast to coast have voted to endorse my candidacy, and more likely will, because they know I have stood with them yesterday, I stand with them today, and will stand with them tomorrow. They know I have the ability to win this election. They know I believe in the sanctity of life and as President I will do all that I can to do to protect life."

Fred Thompson is pro-life. He believes in the sanctity of human life and that every life is worthy of respect. He had a 100% pro-life voting record in the Senate and believes Roe v. Wade was a bad decision that ought to be overturned. He consistently opposed federal funding to promote or pay for abortion and supported the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act, the Child Custody Protection Act, and President Reagan's Mexico City policy. While Fred Thompson supports adult stem cell research, he opposes embryonic stem cell research. He also opposes human cloning.

Politico Attacks Fred Thompson

The writers at Politico are on the war path against Fred Thompson. There is only one reason I can think of for them to make untrue statements about Fred Thompson; they don't want him to win. They are pushing liberal, which stands to reason why they would not want a conservative President.

Fred is actually electable and can win, unlike the current leader, against the Democrat candidates. He is not running his campaign on a liberal-religious ticket and will not receive the backlash from disillusioned conservative voters whose main concerns when voting are going to be illegal immigration (giving no amnesty and securing the borders) and national security.

If it appears to voters that Fred is or may be dropping out I am sure they hope it will discourage voters from choosing Fred as their candidate. I think this is underhanded and shameful and they should be called out for it.

Ben Adler wrote:

Nothing makes for a lackluster afterparty like a tie for third place. And that’s where Fred Thompson finished in Thursday’s caucus.

Jonathan Martin and Mike Allen wrote:

Several Republican officials close to Fred Thompson’s presidential campaign said they expect the candidate will drop out of the race within days if he finishes poorly in Thursday’s Iowa caucus.

The fact is that Fred won third (not tied, McCain is in fourth). Up until the caucus the MSM was raving how the top three would be catapulted to New Hampshire. Now that Fred came in third and is picking up steam all of a sudden its he is tied with McCain and he is going to drop out.

In the after caucus reporting I saw last night I saw a refusal to acknowledge the truth even when Fred himself tells the MSM it is not true and that he had never said he was dropping out. This is irresponsible journalism at its worst.

Spanish-Language Papers Sending Reporters On Campaign Trail

By Mark Fitzgerald
Published: January 03, 2008 3:40 PM ET

CHICAGO At 6:30 local time Thursday, when Iowa voters start ambling across living rooms and school gyms to line up for their presidential caucus choices, the huge out-of-town press corps eagerly awaiting results will include reporters from U.S. Spanish-language papers.

Just by itself, ImpreMedia, the nation's largest publisher of Spanish-langauge papers, will have six reporters out on the presidential campaign trail at least through the Feb. 5 mutli-state "Super Duper Primary."

The apparently unprecedented coverage by Spanish-language newspaper reporters reflects a campaign that has frequently revolved around immigration issues -- and the growth in the Hispanic population in general and eligible voters in particular. Latinos, ImpreMedia notes, are the fastest growing segment of the electorate. [

So if the Latino segment of the electorate is the fastest growing and they need Spanish Language papers to read how many of the "new voters" are legal US citizens. We have a pretty pathetic election system when we cannot even verify the legal status of voters because it may "appear" racist, thus allowing illegals to vote. Sounds like a liberal agenda to me.

Fred Refutes False Report That He Will Drop Out

Here is Senator Fred Thompson in his own words refuting the false report that he will drop out of the Presidential race.

"Any speculation as to what I may or may not do it's just totally that. I mean, it's obviously some other campaigns thought it to their advantage to put that up. I've never said that. I've never implied that in public or in private, and we should take that for what it's worth." Fred Thompson

Michigan Redneck has covered it very thoroughly and so has Fred Thompson News.

The Conservative And Reaganism Labels

This post has been a long time coming and I felt that it needed to be said before the Iowa caucus. I have been watching the MSM (Main Stream Media) and cringe every time they use the word conservative. They have twisted and perverted it so much it is unrecognizable to the average viewer that does not get involved in politics other than to vote or have an occasional conversation. They use it as a label for Republican. They have no clue what conservative really means. This is evident every time they use it to describe Presidential candidates Giuliani, McCain or Huckabee.

Conservative defends America's borders and sovereignty, upholds the Constitution and Bill of Rights as they were meant and not by the mutated interpretation of today, defends all life unborn and so called vegetative, supports and builds up the military that defends this country, punishes traitors and puts God above all. Conservative is many more things, but what it is not is pro-abortion, allowing illegals to steal American taxpayers benefits and hard earned money, allowing criminals to prey upon innocent citizens or allowing foreign enemies to dictate our own laws.

I am tired of the constant attacks by judgmental liberals and hypocritical evangelicals whose litmus test God could not even pass. They cry out that Christians are being persecuted while they ruthlessly condemn and encourage prejudice against Mormons, Catholics, Jews and Muslims. While extremism in any religion is dangerous and violence should not be tolerated, neither should discrimination.

God teaches us through a book we call the Bible that he created man in his own image, that we are his children. That makes all of us sisters and brothers in Christ. As a parent do you allow one of your children to treat another disrespectfully or call them names because the other child has different beliefs? No, you lovingly teach the child to respect and love the sibling regardless. The guilty Evangelicals should have been taught this by their churches, I know that is what my parish teaches.

Liberals will always attack the candidates they believe are true conservatives, they cannot stand the thought of having a true conservative as the leader of our country. Notice the push of the MSM for liberal Republican candidates Giuliani, McCain and Huckabee. They always have a liberal motive for what they do, it is calculated. They believe that any of these men, if nominated, could be destroyed while campaigning for the general election and would lose to any Democrat candidate.

When the MSM likes and pushes a Republican the people should look very closely; they are not conservative. You can be a Republican and not be a conservative, so stop using conservative as a label for Republicans. It is deceiving and unfair to true conservatives because it distorts what they really are. Or, is that the calculated intent of the MSM; to dilute the reputation of the conservative therefore mutating the Republican Party. The Republican Party has made such a hard turn to the left it no longer represents the beliefs of the majority of its members. The Republican Party has really become two parties now.

I keep hearing that McCain has surged in New Hampshire and the MSM is once again pushing him as the potential winner. Of course his numbers are picking up his liberal views more closely match those of New Hampshire. Not to mention that New Hampshire allows Independents to vote in the Democratic and Republican Primaries. If they are not willing to commit to either party then they should not be voting in the Primary to begin with. If they are true Independents they are not going to vote for either party's candidate as president anyway; otherwise they are simply undecided.

In the big picture of the rest of the country this is insignificant, there is no McCain come back. It is figment of the MSM's imagination to cover for the fact that Huckabee is losing numbers. If Huckabee can't win they have to push McCain, he is the next in line on their list of beatable Republican candidates and uninformed voters are lapping it up.

Conservatives have a mind and a voice of their own and they are going to show it. I believe that Fred Thompson will come in at least third in Iowa, which in retrospect is huge because Iowa voters are traditionally more liberal than most other states. His numbers will continue to pick up as Huckabee's numbers drop. The more Huckabee shows what he is willing to do to win the vote the more voters dislike what he has to say. His unwarranted attacks on Romney and his religion, including calling him a liar and a badly choreographed stunt of pulling an attack ad and trying to get the media to spread the ad. McCain is not a conservative and cannot get enough votes from the conservative majority of the Republican Party and Giuliani is not even a contender anymore for the same reasons.

That leaves Romney and Thompson. Romney does not understand federalism or the 2nd Amendment they way I believe a President of the United States should, but ]I believe the majority of the Republican Party is willing to look past Romney's religion and smart enough to see through Huckabee's attacks against him and that Thompson's strong stands and principles for the sovereignty of life and America will push them to the front of the race rather quickly.

Thompson is pro-life (leaving it to the individual and self-governing states to decide is the way this country was founded. Each state must decided whether or not to outlaw abortions); he believes in closed and secure borders and deportation through attrition; he knows and respects the virtue of the 2nd Amendment; he knows the importance of tax, health care, education, and energy reform. He not only acknowledges all of this, he has detailed plans.

I hear the word Reaganism being used all the time and this bugs me as bad as the misuse of the word conservatism. Most people who use this word once again have no clue what it really means. Reagan was the most influential American conservative President in the 20th century he stood for moral order, respect for Western civilization, the legitimacy of old institutions, the force of custom, property rights, and a narrowly defined foreign policy. From the latter he championed individual freedom, equality of opportunity, the rule of law, constitutional government, lower taxes, and less regulation of business. Unless a candidate shares these same beliefs they are not Reagan like, only Fred Thompson can be compared to this honor.

Fred's Solution

Fred Thompson On Israel

The United States is committed to the security of Israel and the safety of the Israeli people. The historical, familial and cultural ties of our peoples are the basis of this commitment. It is strengthened by the shared values and shared interests of our nations. Our mutual goal is an economically and militarily strong Israel at peace with its neighbors. We must exercise our traditional leadership role in the region and continue our longstanding support to Israel to achieve this vision.

Key Issues

Security Cooperation. Security assistance to Israel is a key pillar of U.S. foreign policy and provides a cost-effective way to ensure the security of one of America's closest allies. The new U.S.-Israel security agreement forms the basis of this relationship and will help both the United States and Israel counter common threats in the Middle East and advance mutual goals. Meanwhile, we must also continue comprehensive strategic dialogues, joint military training, and cooperation on development programs such as missile defense.

Iran. Iran remains the world's premier state sponsor of terrorism, has attempted to undermine regional stability, and has repeatedly threatened Israel. Iran is intent on developing nuclear weapons, longer-range missiles, and modern conventional forces. And it is led by a tyrant who has vowed to wipe Israel off the map. Iran also supports terrorist groups throughout the Middle East, such as Hamas and Hizballah, and is responsible for supplying weapons to extremists who are killing U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. A nuclear-armed Iran will not be tolerated. Its sponsorship of terrorism must end as well. We must work with the oppressed people of Iran to bring about regime change, while also working with other responsible democracies to isolate the regime and stop its illicit activities.

Syria. Syria is a state sponsor of terrorism and is determined to develop Weapons of Mass Destruction and advanced ballistic missiles as it builds up its military forces. Its active meddling in Lebanon's internal affairs, and its support of Hezbollah, are destabilizing and must also end. Belligerent public statements by Syrian officials toward Israel and the military build-up along the Golan Heights continue to undermine the possibility of peace talks between Syria and Israel. Serious and sustained international pressure is integral to bringing about change in Damascus.

Hizballah. As Iran's proxy against Israel and the West, Hizballah remains a terror network that poses a direct threat to Israel and U.S. interests in the region. Hizballah has continued to rearm in preparation for another fight with Israel despite its obligations under U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701. The group's stranglehold over Southern Lebanon has increased and continues undermine Lebanese sovereignty. Hizballah is a terror organization that must be disarmed and disbanded.

Hamas. Hamas is another terrorist organization that must also be disarmed and disbanded. The United States should not recognize any Palestinian government run by Hamas, nor provide it financial assistance until Hamas recognizes Israel's right to exist, renounces violence and terrorism, and adheres to all previous Palestinian agreements with Israel. The continued build-up of advanced weaponry by Hamas is a sign that the group does not desire peace and, though Israel should demonstrate restraint, it may be forced to take action against this growing threat.

Peace Process. Achieving the vision of two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side in peace and security is the surest way to bring about an end to the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians. It is also essential to advancing the prosperity and security of both peoples. But to achieve this goal, Israel must have a reliable and credible partner in peace who will take serious steps to build trust and confidence, to include disbanding militias, ending terrorism, and cracking down on extremists. This will require the active support of other states in the region. Israel retains the right to take measures to defend itself, such as conducting counter-terrorist operations and completing its security barrier. [read more]

Italy MP Files Bill to Limit Late-Term Abortions After Baby Survives One

by Steven Ertelt
LifeNews.com Editor
January 1, 2008

Rome, Italy (LifeNews.com) -- A member of the Italian parliament has filed a bill that would halt late-term abortions there following a case of a baby boy who became the victim of an abortion after doctors failed a disability test on him.

Physicians advised his mother to have an abortion after they had misdiagnosed a physical deformity but the boy survived the procedure.

Sandro Bondi of the Forza party also says advances in technology that allow doctors to help more premature babies survive and 3-D and 4-D ultrasounds providing a spectacular look at a baby's development prompted him to file the bill.

Bondi told Italy's AGI news service, "It is a question of amending ministerial directives, a purely administrative act, to adapt the norms of Act 194 to new medical technologies."

He said he hopes to "avoid the repetition of such harrowing cases such as that of Florence's Careggi Hospital, where a 22-week old baby survived an attempted abortion for some days, based on a pre-natal diagnosis which turned out to have been mistaken." [read more]

There's always next cycle - Iowa Caucuses Inconsequential?

Here we are a day away from the Iowa caucuses and what keeps going through my mind is how inconsequential this really is in the big picture. The way the caucuses are set up seem almost anti-voter. Because of the requirements most people cannot even make it to place their vote. Those who have jobs, family commitments, or health conditions are prevented from participating in one of the most important privileges of being an American.

Inconsiderate, liberals could care less about those who are deprived of their vote such as Scott Brennan, chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party who said "There's always next cycle,". They say that if it is important enough to people they would make it; well get a reality check. Real Americans don't have the privilege of choosing between providing for their families and caucusing. Their uncaring attitude says to every military personnel, every person confined by a health condition, and every parent who has no babysitter "screw you".

It is almost as if they were purposely set up to guarantee the majority of participants would be rich, big business liberals who are not effected by real life and would vote in a predictable liberal manner. Since Reagan and Bill Clinton didn't win Iowa and won the Presidency does the Iowa caucus have any real effect on the outcome of the Primary?

They covet their caucus because it forces candidates to spend a lot of time and money in their state, an understandably selfish position. So why has Iowa had this honor for so long? When you have 2.9 million potential voters in a state and because of your unnecessary rules only 100 to 200 thousand voters can participate you have a broken system in desperate need of change.

They tout their influence on the whole process yet they suppress the voters and only have to say about it is that if it is important enough people will make it. Obviously not! If it were possible, they would be there, the numbers don't lie. While I am at it, why are Primaries done they way they are at all? If you want a real election, with real results, that reflect real people; conduct them like a real election; all on the same day with a simple secret ballot.

Battle Over Possible Euthanasia of New York Teenager Gets Pro-Life Attention

by Steven Ertelt
LifeNews.com Editor
January 1, 2008

Bronx, NY (LifeNews.com) -- The battle over the life and death of a teenage girl in New York has drawn the attention of pro-life advocates in recent days. The fight to save Javona Peters reminds some of the struggle of the Schindler family in Florida to save the life of Terri Schiavo, a beloved daughter and sibling whose former husband eventually took her life.

In this case, Peters' parents are disagreeing on whether or not to remove her feeding tube and take her life.

Peters fell into a coma in October while she had a routine medical procedure at Montefiore Medical Center. Doctors have pegged her as being in a persistent vegetative state, a medical diagnosis pro-life advocates dispute because so many patients have partially or fully recovered.

Peters' parents were never married and are estranged and have considered a medical malpractice suit against the hospital, according to a New York Daily News report. [read more]

When are we going to learn that it is not acceptable to kill anyone in a civilized society? This Hitler behavior is sickening. When did America turn into Nazi Germany, killing those who cannot defend themselves and those who have become a burden?

Just because someone cannot communicate or live the quality of life you or I can does not make them any less human. They still have a right to life and are still children of God. I guarentee you if God gave up on us so easily because as sinners we are not living up to the quality of life he created us for there would be no population issues on the Earth.

Illegal Immigration - Betrayl Of The American Citizen

Please tell me these people are not really this ignorant! Those who ignore our laws and protect illegal aliens betray our country and are breaking the backs of hard working Americans who must bare the cost of providing assistance to these law breakers. This is our own government perpetrating the betrayal of our own citizens. Are they not there to represent us? Yet all they do is push their own liberal, big business interests.

I am tired of racist, bigoted members of the government using intimidation tactics to shut the people up. They want us to bend over, take illegal immigration, fund the costs with our hard earned tax dollars, and praise them for it. This is not their decision; when the majority of the country wants secure borders and an end to illegal immigration it is their duty to see that it is done.

Many Fresh Direct Workers, Facing Immigrant Status Test, Quit Jobs

BY JOHN TOSCANO

City Comptroller William C. Thompson and Congressmember Nydia Velazquez have called on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency to stop its audit of employment documentation at a Long Island City food delivery warehouse immediately.

The company, Fresh Direct, a major online grocery delivery service, has already suspended between 100 and 300 warehouse workers, most of them Hispanic, who could not provide the required records of their residency status.

According to Evan Theis, a spokesman for the Teamsters Union, Fresh Direct had more than 900 warehouse workers. The firm's

ability to continue in business may

be hampered by the loss of so many employees.

Recently, the company held a job fair to try to hire new workers, but it was not known what resulted from it.

In the midst of its problems with the immigration service audit, the company recently sustained one victory as the company's employees voted overwhelmingly against union representation in balloting conducted by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Catholic Prayers

I believe, dearest Jesus,
that Thou art united to my soul,
by Thy real presence.
Filled with consolation,
I clasp Thee to my breast,
and return Thee thanks
for this Thine infinite mercy.
Why unite Thyself to a soul so full of self-love,
so cold towards Thee,
so averse to mortification and self-denial?
Thou knowest how much I am attached to pleasure,
comfort and honour,
how ill I endure the slightest provocation,
a harsh word,
or the most trifling adversity.
Why, then, my sweet Saviour,
unite Thyself to so vile and despicable a creature?
It is not sufficient for Thee
to visit my soul with Thy divine lights,
to lead me on in the paths of salvation?
Why condescend to visit me in person?
Dear Jesus,
I have neither words nor feelings
adequately to express the extent of Thy goodness.
I clasp Thee to my heart;
I adore Thee as my first treasure,
my supreme Lover,
my first beginning,
and my last end,
my chief and only good.
O that I could adore Thee
with those feelings with which
the Blessed Virgin adored Thee on earth,
and with which she now adores Thee in heaven!
O that like her,
I could die,
consumed by transports of the most ardent love for Thee!
Complete, my dear Saviour,
the salutary designs which
Thou hast in paying me this visit.
Thou hast given me light and strength
to abandon the paths of perdition;
grant me now light and grace to know,
and steadily to advance in the ways of salvation.
Dear Jesus,
deny me not the grace
requisite for overcoming my passions,
and remaining faithful to Thee.
Grant that I may renounce all earthly satisfactions,
and place my delight in pleasing Thee,
my God, my treasure, and my all.
By Thine infinite goodness,
and by Thine infallible promise of never abandoning
those who cast themselves into Thine arms,
to be directed by Thee,
I beseech Thee, O Lord,
to grant me this grace.
Grant it to me,
by the merits of Thy most precious Blood,
of that saving and vivifying Blood,
so profusely shed for the salvation of all,
and for the tender consolation of Thy faithful servants.
Come to my aid,
O Mary,
my dearest Mother;
intercede for me and enable my unworthy petition to find,
through Thine intercession,
a ready acceptance.
Alas! have pity on Thy poor child,
and cease not to exert a mother's care in its behalf.
Take me, O Mary,
take me under thy protection;
thou shalt not always find me so unworthy
as I have hitherto been.
I will endeavour to copy thy virtues,
especially thy humility and purity,
which have ever been so dear to thee.
Hail, august Mother of Jesus Christ!
receive my humble homage of praise and thanks.
Obtain for me innocence of heart and purity of mind,
that so my thoughts and affections
may be ever pure and chaste.
By thy most powerful intercession,
obtain for me the grace to reap
solid and lasting advantages from the holy Sacrament,
of which I have just participated;
to imitate faithfully thy virtues,
and to steadily follow thine example during my life,
so that in heaven
I may be associated with thee
in eternally praising the unspeakable
and infinite goodness of thy Son.
Thou who wast never defiled by sin,
preserve me in future from its cursed contagion;
inflame my heart with divine love,
that I may ever adhere to my Jesus,
and be never separated from Him eternally.

Kenyan Catholic bishops appeal for dialogue to resolve violence

By Francis Njuguna
Catholic News Service

NAIROBI, Kenya (CNS) -- Following days of violence and death after the announcement of disputed election results, Kenya's Catholic bishops appealed to political leaders to make every effort to engage in dialogue to resolve the crisis.

A church official also said a bishop in one of the areas with the worst violence had appealed for help for the local humanitarian crisis.

"We appeal specifically to the political leaders ... to reach out to one another through dialogue in order to seek a solution to the present situation," said a Jan. 2 statement signed by 24 Kenyan bishops, including Nairobi Cardinal John Njue, chairman of the Kenya Episcopal Conference.

The four-page statement, "My Peace I Give You," emphasized that Kenya needs peace based on justice and true brotherhood. The bishops offered to mediate the crisis and proposed a review of the election results.

"We make an appeal to all responsible to seek ways like establishing a commission to audit and specifically review the tallying of the parliamentary and presidential polls," said the bishops, noting allegations of electoral irregularities.

"We urge that everything possible should be done in order to investigate and establish the truth of these claims by means other than violence and destruction of property," they said. [read more]

Huckabee; A Divider Not A Uniter

A friend of mine, another former Huckabee blogger, sent me a Washington Post article with the video of Gov. Huckabee's dishonest and manipulative press conference. I have purposely tried not to attack Gov. Huckabee because I had considered him an honorable man. I no longer do. All I see now is a dishonest, manipulative politician who is actively fanning the flames of religious division and class warfare.

I have no problem with the ads that Gov. Romney or Gov. Huckabee have run against each other, but I have a huge problem with Gov. Huckabee calling Gov. Romney dishonest and attacking him while claiming he is above it all. It bring to mind Bill Clinton explaining away his affair as not being sexual relations.

I also have a huge problem with Gov. Huckabee's constant attack on every conservative from Sam Brownback to Fred Thompson while at the same time praising Rudy Giuliani and John McCain. The truth is that Giuliani and McCain are nothing but RINO's and it has become very obvious that so is Gov. Huckabee.

Fred Thompson On Traditional American Values

Protecting Life
Fred Thompson is pro-life. He believes in the sanctity of human life and that every life is worthy of respect. He had a 100% pro-life voting record in the Senate and believes Roe v. Wade was a bad decision that ought to be overturned. He consistently opposed federal funding to promote or pay for abortion and supported the Partial Birth Abortion Act, the Child Custody Protection Act, and President Reagan’s “Mexico City” policy. While Fred Thompson supports adult stem cell research, he opposes embryonic stem cell research. He also opposes human cloning.

Supporting Marriage
Fred Thompson believes marriage is the union of one man and one woman, and that this institution is the foundation of society. As such, he supported the Defense of Marriage Act when he served in the Senate. He supports a constitutional amendment to prevent activist judges from misreading the Constitution to force same-sex marriage on any state and on our society.

Protecting our Kids
While censorship is dangerous, obscenity is not legally protected, and laws against it should be vigorously enforced. Parents need to be empowered to protect their children from inappropriate matter, whether on TV, in video games, or on the computer. And we must do all we can to fight the explosion of child pornography over the Internet.

Limiting the Role of the Judiciary
For many years, the judiciary has been too eager to engage in social engineering under the guise of interpreting the Constitution. Fred Thompson is a lawyer who understands the difference between interpreting the law and making it. He is committed to appointing judges who understand and respect that difference and who will only interpret and apply the law, not make it. When President Bush needed someone to shepherd the nomination of John Roberts to be Chief Justice of the United States, he turned to Fred Thompson, who steered the Roberts nomination to its successful confirmation. John Roberts represents the kind of judges Fred Thompson would seek to appoint as President.

Time To Rethink Iowa And New Hampshire

As I watched C-Span's coverage of the upcoming Iowa caucus I was shocked to learn that at most they are expecting 80 thousand Republicans and 120 thousand Democrats to caucus. This is a joke in my opinion. You have around 200 thousand people deciding who will move on and who won't. It is ridiculous that Iowa and New Hampshire have so much say in the nominating process, but it is even worse when you consider that Iowa's turn out is so incredibly low.

I have been considering the regional primaries that has been advocated by Michigan, but I am concerned this won't work because when liberal regions decide conservatives will feel disenfranchised and vice-versa. I am convinced that the only way to solve this is a national primary. I think it will lead to coalition building where one candidate is strong, in say the South, and reaches out to a Western candidate for the VP spot. No matter what though something has to be done. Our nomination process is completely broken.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — All eyes may be on Iowa and New Hampshire, but many of them are rolling.

Despite efforts to evict the two states from the front of the presidential calendar, both managed to hang on for another election cycle that culminates with the Iowa caucuses on Thursday and the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 8. As a year of media attention reaches its crescendo, voters in other states are saying enough is enough. [read more]

When Hospitals Kept Children From Parents

By HOWARD MARKEL, M.D.
Published: January 1, 2008

Early one morning, I visited my daughter’s 5-year-old friend Eddie, who was laid up in the hospital the night after an emergency appendectomy. Understandably, Eddie looked miserable. Just as understandably, so did his parents, who were still in their pajamas in a fold-out cot next to his bed.

The private room for Neill Penney, 7, and his parents, is unlike a pediatrics ward from a century ago. At every children’s hospital across the nation, at just about any time of day or night, you are likely to see at least as many parents as patients.

These days, it seems obvious that seriously ill children need their parents beside them during a hospitalization. Yet unlimited parental visiting hours are relatively new in American hospitals. In 1894, Boston Children’s Hospital had only two “visiting days for parents” per week, 11 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and 3 to 4 p.m. on Sundays (fathers only). At Massachusetts General Hospital in 1910, homesick children who cried too much for their parents were moved to isolation wards so as not to disturb the other patients.

Such draconian prohibitions were the norm at hospitals across the United States. “Order was a word almost sacred in the terminology of the pious gentlemen who wrote the bylaws, raised the funds and sat on the boards of America’s first hospitals,” said Charles E. Rosenberg, a medical historian at Harvard. “They regarded all the hospital’s inmates as moral minors, and most of their regulations were aimed at controlling behavior.” [read more]

Fred Thompson Runs New Iowa Campaign Ad Referencing Abortion Opposition

December 30, 2007

Des Moines, IA (LifeNews.com) -- Fred Thompson is running a new Iowa ad he hopes will catapult him to a strong top three finish and reinvigorate his chances of capturing the Republican nomination. Thompson has lagged in the polls behind Mitt Romney and Mike Huckbee and he hopes to make up some of the ground with the 70 percent of Iowa Republicans who are pro-life.

The new ad highlights other political issues but also touts his opposition to abortion and an endorsement from a leading national pro-life organization.

The 30-second Thompson campaign ad calls the former Tennessee senator the “clear conservative choice” and discusses positive comments from the Wall St. Journal, National Review and Investor's Daily.

“And the National Right to Life Committee endorsed him because they know he can win. Fred Thompson,” the commercial continues.

The ad shows images of Thompson addressing various audiences, American flags, and Iowa supporters with signs and other campaign items at rallies for him.

Thompson has conducted a barnstorming tour of Iowa over the last few weeks hoping to put together a strong enough showing there to build up momentum for subsequent states. [read more]

Fred Thompson's First Principles

Anyone who has heard me speak knows my firm commitment to what I call “First Principles.” These grow out of the documents of our Nation’s founding and the wisdom of the ages. They are core beliefs that guide my approach to the issues that are crucial to our Nation’s future. I believe in--

Individual Liberty . As Jefferson spelled out in the Declaration of Independence, our basic rights come from God, not from government, and that among these inalienable rights is the right to liberty. We must allow individuals to lead their lives with minimal government interference.

Personal Responsibility . The corollary to liberty is responsibility. No society can succeed and thrive for any duration unless free people act in a responsible way. All of us must take responsibility for our actions and strive to improve our own lives and to contribute to building a better society.

Free Markets . Free people are best equipped to order their own affairs, and the common interest benefits from and is improved by the aggregate success of all. We must reform our tax system, encourage investment, support entrepreneurial spirit, open markets abroad to American goods, and minimize burdensome government regulations to continue to expand the economy and bring increased wealth to all Americans.

Limited Government . Government must be strong enough to protect us, competent enough to provide basic government services, but limited by the delineated powers in the Constitution.

Federalism . Our Constitution innovatively guarantees our liberties by spreading power among the three branches of the federal government, and between the federal government and the states. In considering any action by the government, we must always ask two questions: is the government better equipped than the private sector to perform the task and, if so, what level of government (federal or state) ought to do it. Washington is not the seat of all wisdom. (
More on Federalism)

Protecting our Country . The first responsibility of the federal government is to protect the nation and the American people. There is no more important task. We must have a strong and effective military, capable intelligence services, and a vigorous law enforcement and homeland security capacity.

Traditional American Values . A healthy society is predicated on belief in God; respect for all life; strong families centered on the institution of marriage—the union of a man and a woman; and self-respect and tolerance of others. While we are all free to live our lives in the pursuit of our own happiness, the government has a responsibility to respect the right of parents to raise their children and to promote the values that produce the strongest society.

The Rule of Law . We protect our liberty, secure our rights, and promote a just and stable society through the rule of law. We owe to ourselves and our fellow citizens our own adherence to the rules, but tough law enforcement and punishment for those who do not. A free and independent judiciary that interprets the law by adhering strictly to legal text and respects its limited role in our system of government is essential to our security and freedom, and we need judges who understand that role if we are to preserve our republic and freedom.

Conserving Our Nation’s Resources . Each of us is put on Earth for a limited period of time. We must always strive to ensure that the resources we use to lead our lives are here for future generations to enjoy and use as well.

We live in the greatest country on earth. We have been truly blessed. This blessing carries with it an obligation: to keep it that way and to leave this country at least as strong, prosperous, and united as when we entered it.

2007's Arizona border activity marked by fence-building and surveillance

With attention riveted in Arizona during 2007 on border security over illegal immigration, drug smuggling and potential terrorist infiltration, federal authorities responded with a spree of fence-building and high-tech surveillance. The construction included both old-fashioned fences and the new high-tech virtual variety, plus vehicle barriers and remote controlled aircraft equipped with eyes in the sky. And there are signs that the buildup is having an impact, particularly in far southwestern Arizona. In the Border Patrol's Yuma sector, which covers roughly Arizona's westernmost 110 miles of border, apprehensions of illegal immigrants plunged dramatically. They were down 68 percent during fiscal 2007 over the previous year -- from more than 118,000 to only about 38,000. By comparison, totals in the Tucson sector for the fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, dipped by 4 percent to 378,000 from 392,000. [read more]

School Aims to Catch Students from Mexico

CALEXICO, Calif. (AP) _ Children are more apt to shield their faces than to smile when Daniel Santillan points his camera. Santillan's photos aren't for any picture album or yearbook _ they help prove that Mexicans are illegally attending public schools in this California border community. With too many students and too few classrooms, Calexico school officials took the unusual step of hiring someone to photograph children and document the offenders. Santillan snaps pictures at the city's downtown border crossing and shares the images with school principals, who use them as evidence to kick out those living in Mexico. [read more]

Thompson Plan for Tax Relief and New Economic Growth

In today's competitive global economy, a fair, simple, and pro-growth tax system is essential for America's success. America must be the best place in the world to invest and create high-paying jobs.

Fred Thompson's Plan for Tax Relief and Economic Growth promotes fairness and simplicity in the tax code and will create greater growth in the economy. It is based on a fundamental assumption that keeping tax rates low increases economic growth and enhances American competitiveness in the global economy. Increased economic growth will lead to higher wages and higher levels of employment in America. Equally important, lower taxes enhance the personal and economic freedom of all Americans by allowing them to keep more of their hard-earned dollars. Allowing Americans to control their own financial future has been integral to our nation's economic success and strength since its founding, and is the key to our future.

The economic proposals offered by Democrats will move us in the wrong direction -- their plan for higher taxes, in particular, will reduce America's competitiveness, push investment and jobs overseas, and send more of workers' and families' income to Washington. The conservative approach is to reduce government spending and return more money to America's families.

The following elements of the Thompson Plan for Tax Relief and Economic Growth will spur economic growth and move the nation towards a fairer, simpler tax system on the way to Fred Thompson's ultimate goal of fundamental tax reform.
