More Dirty Tricks From Huckabee Supporters

I, myself, am growing tired of hearing about dirty tricks, attacks, and purposely misleading the vote among some Republican campaigns. Considering that he is running on a religious platform, Huckabee should be above this unbiblical behavior, but I see his campaign/supporters are one of the biggest violators.

Thompson Camp Reports "Smear" Fliers Misleading Record

ABC's Christine Byun reports:

They say fliers with misleading information about the former Tennessee senator’s abortion record were placed on parked cars at their event venue last night (http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/01/thompson-lets-g.html). The fliers insinuate Thompson voted for funding for abortions through a bill that supported Planned Parenthood. Thompson –- who has received the endorsement of national anti-abortion organization National Right to Life –- did vote for the bill in question, H.R. 3061. However, the bill specifically states that it does not include federal funding for abortions and does not mention Planned Parenthood. The flier quotes Scripture –- Proverbs 31:8 –- and includes a picture of the former Senator. [read more]

South Carolinians Say "No More" to Huckabee

Voters Demand Huckabee Stop Push Polling

Columbia, SC - South Carolinians have been inundated with push polling that has purposely lied about Fred Thompson and his record while complimenting Mike Huckabee. These dastardly calls are being paid for by Huckabee donors.

The founders of the organization making these falsehoods, Common Sense Issues, held a fundraiser for Huckabee in November. Despite being asked to stop the calls and return all funds raised at that fundraiser, Mike Huckabee continues to stand idly by.

South Carolinians are disgusted by these calls and are demanding Mike Huckabee stop these calls. Fred Thompson Statement on Huckabee's Comments on CNN

McLean, VA - Fred Thompson released the following statement today on Governor Mike Huckabee's comments on CNN that the Constitution is a "living, breathing document":

This morning I heard that one of the other candidates commented that the Constitution is a "living, breathing document."

Frankly, I assumed this came from Senator Clinton or Senator Obama. It is identical to what Al Gore said when he was running for President in 2000, when he said he would look for judges "who understand that our Constitution is a living, breathing document, that it was intended by our founders to be interpreted in the light of the constantly evolving experience of the American people."

Imagine my surprise when I learned that this statement actually came from my opponent, Governor Huckabee, in an interview with CNN this morning. Now I know Governor Huckabee was talking about amending the Constitution, but I don't think he understood that he was using code words that support judicial activism.

He does not appear to understand that reliance on the notion that the Constitution is a living, breathing document is precisely the kind of wrong-headed thinking about the Constitution that gave us Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion across our nation, and Lawrence v. Texas, which decriminalized sodomy.

I do not believe the Constitution is a living, breathing document. I am committed to appointing strict constructionist judges to the bench if I am elected President, strict constructionists who believe the Constitution has a fixed meaning that can be applied to cases that come before the courts today. They do NOT believe the Constitution is a "living, breathing document," whose meaning, constantly changing with the sifting sands of our culture, can be determined and applied by unelected judges.

I fear that this loose language about our Constitution calls into question Governor Huckabee's appreciation and understanding of the issue of judicial activism and raises questions as to what kind of judges he would appoint were he to become President.

South Carolina Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom Endorses Fred Thompson

Statewide Elected Official and Close Political Ally of Gov. Mark Sanford Backs Thompson for President

Columbia, SC -
Fred Thompson was endorsed today by South Carolina Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom. This endorsement is one more clear indication of Thompson's building momentum in the state.

"Senator Thompson's clear leadership on social, fiscal, and defense issues, as well as his strong and proven stance for border security and the rule of law make him a leader like Mark Sanford," General Eckstrom said. "I proudly and fully support his candidacy for President, and I ask all conservatives to do the same. Senator Thompson is the only conservative candidate who is now strongly surging in the polls. Momentum is crucial and Senator Thompson has it."

General Richard Eckstrom is serving in his second term as South Carolina Comptroller General. Prior to that he served one term as South Carolina Treasurer. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). General Eckstrom is also a Brig adier General in the South Carolina State Guard, having previously served 3 years in the US Navy, and another 22 years in the Navy Reserve. He is a member of First Presbyterian church in Columbia.

"It is always gratifying when an elected official chooses to support my campaign for President, but even more so when that official is known as a 'Watchdog for the Taxpayers' and a leading voice for conservative principles as is General Eckstrom," said Senator Thompson. "I am also humbled that General Eckstrom joins so many other veterans of our armed forces that are supporting our campaign."

Fred Thompson On Taking Care Of Our Veterans And Military Personnel

The United States is a great nation that serves as a beacon of hope and freedom for others around the world. Our greatness is attributable to the sacrifice of millions of American patriots who have worn our nation's uniform, through peace and war, with pride and distinction. While we often focus on the high tech tools of combat, our true strength comes from those willing to take up these weapons when duty calls. Our nation is eternally indebted to the veterans who served our country bravely in the past, and the young men and women who follow in their footsteps today.

The rights and freedoms made possible by our military have also made us a target of others. Islamic extremists look at the current war as part of a struggle that has been going on for hundreds of years. Their intent is to bring the United States to its knees. Other, more conventional threats also lurk beyond our borders that we must be prepared to confront. To protect our country and the American people, we must maintain the world's most preeminent military force and demonstrate the will to prevail. We must match the determination and valor of our young men and women in uniform by increasing the size of our military, modernizing the force, and taking care of our troops, their families, and our veterans.

The nation's obligation to our men and women in uniform does not end when they leave the battlefield or active service. Sometimes it's just the beginning. Our current and former military personnel don't ask for much, but many have needs that must be addressed. Caring for our veterans is not only the right thing to do, it is also a national security issue vital to recruiting and retaining the next greatest generation.

As President, I would take the following actions to revitalize our Armed Forces and care for our veterans.

JESUS TOMB HOAX RESURRECTED

Last year, “Titanic” director James Cameron and TV-director Simcha Jacobovici said that the Jesus family tomb had been found. The archaeological community dismissed their contention completely, and now Princeton’s James Charlesworth has completed a Jerusalem conference that brought together over 50 scientists to discuss the issue.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on the conference:

“Last year, James Cameron declared that it had been determined ‘beyond any reasonable doubt’ that the tomb of Jesus and his family had been found. His comment was absurd then, and it looks even more enfeebled now following the Charlesworth conference.

“Charlesworth, while conceding the unexceptional—there is no unqualified empirical evidence that would settle the issue altogether—questions why, if this really were Jesus’ ossuary, would the followers of the person they believed was the Son of God leave an inscription of Jesus’ name that was merely ‘graffiti, just scratching’? Why, questions Charlesworth, was there ‘no ornamentation’? And why would the followers of the Son of God choose such a ‘lousy’ looking tomb?

“The media event of the conference, however, centered on the claims of Ruth Gat, widow of archaeologist Yosef Gat. She said that her husband believed that he had found Jesus’ tomb, but because he was a Holocaust survivor, he didn’t want to stir up anti-Semitism by saying this in public.

“Gat was involved in the excavation, but he died soon after, producing no evidence to sustain his alleged belief. In any event, surely he would not have been afraid of stirring anti-Semitism by sharing his belief with his colleagues. Yet his boss, Amos Kloner, maintains today that it is ‘absolutely not the case’ that Gat believed they had found Jesus’ tomb. Also, Dr. Shimon Gibson, who worked alongside Gat, says Gat never told him the story now being floated by his wife.

“At the conference, Kloner responded to Jacobovici after he floated his ‘Jesus hoax’ again, branding him a ‘liar.’ So yes, the ‘Titanic Fraud’ continues.”

Pope Benedict mourns death of Tawi-Tawi priest

Pope Benedict XVI expressed sadness yesterday over the killing of Roman Catholic priest Fr. Jesus Reynaldo Roda and called on his murderers to renounce violence.

Benedict relayed the message through Papal Secretary of State Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone to Bishop Angelito Lampon of the Vicariate of Jolo and a confrere of Roda’s in the Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

Archbishop Edward Adams, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, released the message to the media.

At least 10 unidentified men shot Roda when he resisted a kidnapping attempt Tuesday night inside the chapel of Notre Dame school, which he managed, in Tabawan, Tawi-Tawi. The fleeing suspects – believed to be members of the Abu Sayyaf – abducted a teacher, Omar Taub.

Bertone said the Pope “was saddened to learn of the brutal and tragic killing” of Roda but praised the slain priest for being an “example to priests and people throughout the region, and especially to the young.”

The Pontiff also called on Roda’s killers to “renounce the ways of violence and to play their part in building a just and peaceful society where all can live together in harmony.” [read more]

Chicago, IL (LifeNews.com) -- A leading national pro-life group that works with state legislators to pass pro-life laws has released a new national ranking of states based on the laws they've approved related to abortion and bioethics topics. Americans United for Life's fifth annual ranking of the most and least pro-life states shows Michigan in the lead for the third time.

After Michigan, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Kansas topped the list. South Dakota, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Virginia rounded out the top ten.

"These states have made great strides in protecting women and their children from the negative consequences of abortion," Denise Burke, an AUL attorney, told LifeNews.com Tuesday.

On the bottom end of the scale, Oregon, which has the only law legalizing assisted suicide, placed last with California, Connecticut, New Jersey, Vermont and Hawaii finishing in the bottom. [read more]

Democrats go deep to court Latino vote - They're reaching into the communities in key Western states and avoiding old-style ethnic politicking.

By Mark Z. Barabak and Robin Abcarian, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
January 17, 2008

LAS VEGAS -- Hillary Rodham Clinton was sympathetic as, one after another, members of the audience discussed their unhappy dealings with shady home lenders.

"This is a problem we're going to talk a lot about in this campaign," the Democratic hopeful promised, suggesting that presidential candidates too often isolate issues like the sub-prime mortgage meltdown from the bigger economic picture.

"All of our problems are interconnected, but we treat them as though one is guacamole and one is chips," the New York senator said, drawing laughter and applause from the mostly Latino crowd gathered at the Lindo Michoacan restaurant off the Las Vegas Strip.

As the presidential campaign moves south and west from the mostly white, heavily rural states of Iowa and New Hampshire, Democrats are reaching out to Latino voters as never before -- and not just through strained similes, or rallies set to mariachi music.

In California, Nevada, Arizona and elsewhere across the country, the candidates are advertising extensively in Spanish, running bilingual phone banks and dispatching door-knockers fluent in English and Spanish.

They have ardently wooed and won the support of Latino political luminaries -- among them Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for Clinton and former Transportation and Energy Secretary Federico Pena for Barack Obama -- and dispatched them to key states to campaign on their behalf. [read more]

CARNEGIE HALL STOOPS LOW;
“JERRY SPRINGER” DIRTIES ITS NAME

On January 29 and 30, “Jerry Springer—The Opera” will be performed at Carnegie Hall. The first act is a parody of the Jerry Springer Show; the second act depicts the television personality in Hell attempting to bridge a resolution between Jesus and Satan.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue laced into the show today:

“When this opera debuted in London, it was the subject of a libel suit for defaming Christians. When the BBC picked it up, it drew more than 60,000 complaints for its anti-Christian theme. Not bad for a non-Christian country. The London Times described the concert as a ‘cocktail of biblical characters, filthy arias and tap dancing Ku Klux Klansman.’ After watching a DVD version, I would say that’s an understatement. In a Nexis search, linking ‘blasphemous’ with the show provides 745 hits; there are 112 articles that use the word ‘filth’ to describe the concert.

“The opera has Jesus introduced as that ‘hypocrite son of the fascist tyrant on high, Jesus of Nazareth.’ He is portrayed as a fat, effeminate gay-like character (he admits to being ‘a bit gay’ after the chorus labels him as such) who walks around in a diaper. The crucifixion is mocked, the Eucharist is trashed, the Virgin Mary is introduced as a woman who was ‘raped by an angel’ and Eve fondles Jesus’ genitals. [For a detailed description, click
here; adult language is used.]

“More than anything else, what this show celebrates is moral nihilism. At the end, it even voices this theme: ‘Nothing is wrong and nothing is right’ and ‘there are no absolutes of good and evil.’ This is exactly what the Nazis said in their defense at Nuremberg.

“Veteran BBC official William Rees-Mogg said he was ‘ashamed of the BBC’ for airing this show. Will the patrons of Carnegie Hall be similarly ashamed? Contact:
publicaffairs@carnegiehall..org. We will contact its most generous corporate sponsors.”

Fred Thompson on CNN's Situation Room 01-16-08

Needing a win, Thompson lays into rivals

News Journal, Wilmington, Delaware

BILL THEOBALD, Gannett News Service

ABBEVILLE, S.C. -- Fred Thompson accused Mitt Romney of pandering. He called Mike Huckabee a flip-flopper. And just for good measure, he called his friend John McCain soft on immigration.

In the course of five minutes Wednesday, Thompson laid out his campaign strategy for the days leading up to the South Carolina Republican presidential primary. If he doesn't do well Saturday, he could quit the race.

Thompson said Romney, a Michigan native and former Massachusetts governor, tailors his message to whatever state he is in. Romney promised Michigan voters a massive federal bailout of the state's economy, something Thompson said would be wrong for a Republican. That's "a very conservative message, right?" he asked sarcastically.

Huckabee took even more fire. [read more]

Function, not fashion needed to fight cold - Layering, hand, toe warmers recommended for NFC title game

By Malavika Jagannathan
mjaganna@greenbaypressgazettecom

It'll be difficult to shatter the Ice Bowl's record-low temperatures, but prepare for — and dress for — arctic-like conditions for Sunday's game at Lambeau Field.

Long-range forecasts are often misleading, however, just look at last week's snowstorm during the Green Bay Packers-Seattle Seahawks playoff game as one example.

"Quality polar underwear, toe and hand warmers used by Wisconsin deer hunters and the adult beverage snowshoe grog would all be beneficial," suggests Denny McCormack of Oconto, who was at the 1967 game between the Packers and Dallas Cowboys that solidified the Frozen Tundra mystique.

Experts agree the best way to stay warm isn't necessarily to down a lot of beer, although that may help numb the glacial conditions, but to layer carefully and leave your cotton clothing at home.

"Dressing for activity is different than dressing for a game where there's not a lot of movement," said David Zeller, owner of Zellers Ski and Sport in Allouez. [read more]

Undocumented workers have left Oklahoma by the thousands

I do not agree with the economic claims of this article, but you can weed out some interesting information. Now if every state would pass similar legislation illegals would self deport from the country and we could begin to repair our states' economies and take care of our own people.

Since 1804 was approved in Oklahoma, 15,000-25,000 illegal immigrants have left Tulsa County, the Greater Tulsa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce says. Executive director Francisco Trevino bases the estimate on school enrollment, church attendance and reports from bus companies with service to Mexico.

"People are leaving to Mexico or Canada or other states," says Jim Garcia, manager of Tulsa's El Mercadito, a Hispanic grocery. He says sales have fallen 40% since Nov. 1. "A lot of people are going to Missouri or Arkansas because they think it's safer."

Arkansas state Rep. Rick Green, a Republican, says he has heard from a doctor who complained that illegal immigrants from Oklahoma have crossed the state line for medical care.

"With Arkansas being a very poor state economically, the concern is whether we can shoulder these expenses" stemming from any influx of immigrants from Oklahoma, he says.

Supporters of 1804 say the state will benefit from illegal immigrants leaving. "That's money in our pocket," says Carol Helm of Immigration Reform for Oklahoma Now. [read more]

Why Public Schooling Is Better Than Homeschooling ~ Scott Ott

Here is some light hearted satire for you:

1. Most parents were educated in the under funded public school system, and so are not smart enough to homeschool their own children.

2. Children who receive one-on-one homeschooling will learn more than others, giving them an unfair advantage in the marketplace. This is undemocratic.

3. How can children learn to defend themselves unless they have to fight off bullies on a daily basis?

4. Ridicule from other children is important to the socialization process.

5. Children in public schools can get more practice "Just Saying No" to drugs, cigarettes and alcohol.

6. Fluorescent lighting may have significant health benefits.

7. Publicly asking permission to go to the bathroom teaches young people their place in society.

8. The fashion industry depends upon the peer pressure that only public schools can generate.

9. Public schools foster cultural literacy, passing on important traditions like the singing of "Jingle Bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg..."

10. Homeschooled children may not learn important office career skills, like how to sit still for six hours straight.

PACKERS HOST GIANTS IN NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - FOR THE GEORGE S. HALAS TROPHY

-No franchise has won more NFC Championships (including NFL Championship Games, 1933-69), than the Packers, who have emerged victorious 10 times in 13 appearances.

-Since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, the Packers have appeared in the game three times, all in the Favre era.

-The team's first appearance came in 1995, when it traveled to Dallas to take on the Cowboys. Green Bay held a fourth-quarter lead but fell behind after two fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns from Emmitt Smith. For the third straight season, Green Bay's season ended in Dallas.

-The Packers reached the NFC title game again the following year, hosting the first title game at Lambeau Field since the 'Ice Bowl'. The Packers overcame two early deficits to defeat the Panthers, 30-13, for their first Super Bowl appearance in 29 years. They would go on to win the club's third Super Bowl and 12th NFL championship. [read the full story and dope sheet]

O'er thy pathway through life still I hover. Thee to comfort, to solace, to cheer; With the love of a fond, saving brother, Through this desert of trial and fear.

Statement from Thompson for President Campaign Manager Bill Lacy on Michigan Primary Results

McLean, VA - Thompson for President Campaign Manager Bill Lacy released the following statement on the results of the Michigan Primary:

"Tonight's results in Michigan make two things clear: First, the Republican campaign for President remains wide-open. Our party faithful are still looking for someone who meets all the qualifications they seek: A true consistent conservative with the experience to keep the country safe. Second, Mike Huckabee's campaign to be John McCain's Vice President has hit a snag. He has gone from the mid-thirties in Iowa to 11% in New Hampshire and now about 15% in Michigan.

"On higher taxes and looser immigration, Huckabee has been done his best these past few weeks to mimic McCain. But this is nothing new. In fact, while John McCai n was leading the Senate charge to grant amnesty for illegal immigrants, Mike Huckabee was one of the loudest cheerleaders. And at the same time McCain was voting against the Bush tax cuts, Huckabee was in Arkansas increasing taxes some 21 times.

"As for Mitt Romney, he has been all over the map on virtually every issue important to conservative voters.

"As the contest moves to South Carolina, look for Romney, McCain and Huckabee to face serious questions about their commitment to consistent conservative principles. Their records are in stark contrast to Fred Thompson, who remains the one true steadfast conservative in this race.

"The bottom line is that tonight is a whole new ball game and tomorrow morning begins a brand new campaign where Republicans are looking for the clear conservative choice."

Giuliani disses Green Bay Packers fan

by Mosheh Oinounou

Punta Gorda, FL — Rudy Giuliani refused to sign a potential voter’s Green Bay Packers hat after a campaign stop Monday afternoon, saying it would be “bad luck.”

The loyal New York Giants fan denied the request as he was signing autographs and posing for photos after a meet and greet at the Village Fish Market and Restaurant on day two of his bus tour through the Sunshine State. While Florida has become the campaign’s must-win state, Giuliani is apparently drawing a line as to how far he will go to woo voters.

“I won’t sign that,” he said after campaign chairman Pat Oxford handed him the hat. “No, no, no. That would be bad luck right now.” [read more]

I know I will always remember this refusal. What a snub in the face of all Green Bay Packers fans and the greats like Bart Star, Reggie White and Ahman Green.

NH a safe haven: Welcome, illegals and terrorists

If House Bill 404 becomes law, any local law enforcement officer in New Hampshire who finds what he suspects to be an illegal alien would be forbidden by law from even investigating the suspect based on immigration status.

Rep. Lily Mesa, D-Manchester, sponsored HB 404 because, she says, there have been "many instances" of "police harassing people." She means illegal immigrants.

But her bill does not prohibit harassment. It prohibits local law enforcement officers from "(i)nvestigating or enforcing any violation of federal immigration laws."

That expands on the 2005 District Court ruling that police in New Hampshire could not charge illegal immigrants with trespassing because that would be an unconstitutional attempt to regulate immigration violations, "a field that is solely governed by federal law," the judge ruled. [read more]

I am getting tired of hearing about the protections, rights and assistance the illegals are gaining from the liberal agenda. America needs to stand up for their protection and rights and US citizens and demand that the borders be sealed and illegals are punished for breaking our laws. We should not be re-writing our laws to accommodate them, this is a betrayal to our sovereignty.

The republican principle demands that the deliberate sense of the community should govern the conduct of those to whom they intrust the management of their affairs; but it does not require an unqualified complaisance to every sudden breeze of passion or to every transient impulse which the people may receive from the arts of men, who flatter their prejudices to betray their interests.

Christianophobia: Irrational fear or hatred of Christians

1/15/2008

Zenit News Agency (www.zenit.org)

There is a growing hostility toward Christians in Europe. Vatican officials, including Archbishop Dominique Mamberti of the Vatican Secretariat of State, have supported the recognition of the term and acknowledge the phenomenon.

Christians praying at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. US President George W. Bush, who has invoked his Christian faith to justify his policies over the last seven years, will this week embark on a pilgrimage to some of his religion's most sacred sites, including the Church of the Nativity.

VIENNA, Austria (Zenit) - International organizations need to know that being a Christian in Europe sometimes means being the victim of Christianophobia, say the promoters of a new Web site detailing this phenomenon.

The "Europe for Christ!" network launched www.christianophobia.eu from Vienna to both explain what Christianophobia is, and to tell how Europeans have experienced it.

"Christianophobia means irrational fear or hatred of Christians, or Christianity in general," explained Gudrun Kugler, founder of the site. "It includes anti-Christian bias, and also manifests itself in the slow marginalization of those confessing the Christian faith."

The site includes cases of mockery or ridiculing of the Christian faith, the removal of Christian symbols from public places, restrictions on wearing symbols of Christian faith, and attacks in movies and television broadcasts.

The site also details the persecution of "politically incorrect" positions intrinsic to the Christian faith, such as the opposition to abortion and gay "marriage." Cases range from people being fired or sentenced to pay a fine. [read more]

In Case You Missed It....."New Poll says Thompson 'Gaining' in South Carolina."

With five days to go until Republicans vote in South Carolina, Senator Fred Thompson's campaign is surging. A new Rasmussen poll released today shows the Tennessee Senator in a statistical dead heat for second place in the Palmetto State.

"Fred Thompson is surging in South Carolina, just as expected," said Campaign Manager Bill Lacy. "As South Carolina voters focus on Saturday's primary election, they agree that Fred is the true conservative in this race who can bring together the Reagan Coalition of limited government and strong national security."

According to the Rasmussen survey, "Over the past several days, the only real movement in South Carolina's Republican Presidential Primary has been a four-point gain for Fred Thompson and a five-point decline for Mike Huckabee."

The new poll results come on the heels of Sen. Thompson's winning debate performance last Thursday, which received praise from Rush Limbaugh, Bill Bennett and virtually every conservative blog and pundit.

Friends of Fred Thompson also announced today it will launch a new statewide television ad in South Carolina on Tuesday in which the senator speaks directly to voters stating, "Friends, we're in a fight for our conservative values." The spot, titled "Always," can be viewed at

Wisconsin Legislature to Hold Hearing on Assisted Suicide Bill Next Week Email this article

LifeNews.com Editor
January 14, 2008

Madison, WI (LifeNews.com) -- The Wisconsin legislature will hold a hearing on a bill that would legalize assisted suicide and make the state the second after Oregon to allow the grisly practice. The bill follows similar measures in other states such as Vermont, Hawaii and California that failed last year and a new ballot initiative in Washington.

State Sen. Fred Risser and state Rep. Frank Boyle, two Democrats, are behind the legislation, which would allow terminally ill patients to request life-ending drugs from their physicians.

The bill requires patients to get their terminally ill condition verified by two doctors and they must be expected to die within the next six months. Only then can they request the drugs to be used in killing themselves.

Risser and Boyle has proposed similar bills in previous years but they never received votes in either state House or Senate.

On January 23, the Senate Public Health, Senior Issues, Long Term Care and Privacy Committee will hold a public hearing on the measure, SB 151. [read more]

Michigan Crowd Boos McCain on Illegal Immigration

Detroit (CNSNews.com) - Sen. John McCain of Arizona, winner of last Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, drew cheers and jeers from an audience of over 500 conservative activists in Michigan over the weekend.

Just days ahead of the Michigan primary, McCain was one of three Republican presidential hopefuls, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Rep. Duncan Hunter of California, to visit the Americans for Prosperity Summit held Saturday in the Detroit suburb of Livonia.

McCain was alternately cheered and jeered by the vocal, pro-growth, "limit-the-government" activist crowd. He was cheered for his military service and for his pledges to maintain a strong defense, to cut taxes and to veto earmarks, but he was booed for his stances on immigration and the environment. JESUS TRASHED IN ANTI-HUCKABEE SKIT;
OFFENSE AIRS ON UTAH NPR STATION

On January 7, an anti-Huckabee skit trashed Jesus on a radio show, “Fair Game with Faith Salie.” It aired on KCPW, Utah’s National Public Radio station. Here is a transcript of the offensive segment:

[Woman’s voice]: And now another Huckabee family recipe leaked by his opponents.

[Male Voice]: Tired of bland unsatisfying Eucharists? Try this Huckabee family favorite. Deep-Fried Body of Christ--boring holy wafers no more. Take one Eucharist. Preferably post transubstantiation. Deep-fry in fat, not vegetable oil, ladies, until crispy. Serve piping hot. Mike likes to top his Christ with whipped cream and sprinkles. But his wife Janet and the boys like theirs with heavy gravy and cream puffs. It goes great with red wine.

[Woman’s voice]: Now that is just ridiculous. Everyone knows evangelicals don’t believe in transubstantiation.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:

“We are lodging a complaint with Ed Sweeney, KCPW’s general manager. This kind of programming would be over-the-top on a shock-jock station, never mind a station funded by the taxpayers. We would also like to know who was behind this assault on Jesus. Therefore, we are asking for an investigation. Whoever it was, he or she used presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee and evangelicals as foil, saving the real sucker punch for Roman Catholics. This is despicable on several counts: it is blasphemous and bigoted. But it may also be motivated by a political calculus, making it really dirty if it is.”

Statement of the National Rifle Association By Wayne LaPierre And Chris Cox On The Pending U.S. Supreme Court Case

Saturday, January 12, 2008

In the coming months, the U.S. Supreme Court will consider the constitutionality of Washington, D.C.’s ban on handgun ownership and self-defense in law-abiding residents’ homes. The Court will first address the question of whether the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, as embodied in the Bill of Rights, protects the rights of individuals or a right of the government. If the Court agrees that this is an individual right, they will then determine if D.C.’s self-defense and handgun bans are constitutional.

The position of the National Rifle Association is clear. The Second Amendment protects the fundamental, individual right of law-abiding citizens to own firearms for any lawful purpose. Further, any law infringing this freedom, including a ban on self-defense and handgun ownership, is unconstitutional and provides no benefit to curbing crime. Rather, these types of restrictions only leave the law-abiding more susceptible to criminal attack.

The U.S. Government, through its Solicitor General, has filed an amicus brief in this case. We applaud the government’s recognition that the Second Amendment protects a fundamental, individual right that is “central to the preservation of liberty.” The brief also correctly recognizes that the D.C. statutes ban “a commonly-used and commonly-possessed firearm in a way that has no grounding in Framing-era practice,” the Second Amendment applies to the District of Columbia, is not restricted to service in a militia and secures the natural right of self-defense. If our country, when pressed with wrongs at the point of the bayonet, had been governed by its heads instead of its hearts, where should we have been now? Hanging on a gallows as high as Haman's.
