Obama and Clinton Join Senate Against Helping Pregnant Women, McCain Disagrees

March 14, 2008

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Pro-abortion Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton joined a majority of the Senate Thursday night in rejecting an amendment that would offer financial support to poor pregnant women and their unborn children. Their votes contrasted with likely GOP presidential nominee John McCain.

The two candidates voted against a measure by Sen. Wayne Allard of Colorado that would have included pregnant women and their unborn children in the SCHIP program.

Pro-life groups strongly supported the amendment because it would help women who may otherwise have an abortion because of financial worries about affording a baby. [read more]

it is our fervent hope and prayer
that You who have begun this good work in us

LEWIS BLACK’S SHOW GETS UGLY

Last night, Comedy Central aired the first show in a new series, “Lewis Black’s Root of All Evil.” Black played a judge ruling on who was more evil—the Catholic Church or Oprah Winfrey. Click
here for a partial transcript.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue raised questions about it today:

“No group in the U.S. sexually molests minors more than public school teachers; their rate is estimated to be 100 times that of Catholic priests (see the work of Dr. Charol Shakeshaft.) Moreover, the teachers unions still make it near impossible to fire a molesting teacher. Yet it wasn’t the public school industry that was labeled evil by the show, it was the Catholic Church.

“Radical Muslims behead their enemies, real and contrived, terrorize non-combatants, run planes into buildings, shoot nuns in the back, kidnap and kill bishops, burn churches to the ground, legally murder those who want to convert, but no one associated with Lewis Black’s show has the guts to get them. So instead they rip the Catholic Church for its role during the Inquisition. And that role, if truth be told, was miniscule compared to the role of the civil authorities. Indeed, the role of the Catholic Church back then, as compared to the role of radical Muslims today, was positively angelic.

“The worst part of the show was the assault on Our Blessed Mother and Pope Benedict XVI. This is a direct quote: ‘The Catholic Church is also evil because it has such a grip over the mindless masses that they’ll wait in line, thousands of them in the rain for hours, just to get a glimpse of a pork rind in the shape of the Virgin Mary…God impregnated Mary. We have a whole religion based on one woman who really stuck to her story.’ The pope was called ‘a hypocrite in his Prada loafers and his ball gown. How can he condemn homosexuality when he dresses like he is on his way to nickel cosmo night at the Veiny Shaft Tavern?’

“The only thing connecting this wild-swinging tirade was hate.”

Help the Marine Heroes of Haditha

Last year, I wrote to you about the plight of three American heroes, Lance Cpl. Stephen Tatum, Lance Cpl. Justin Sharratt, and Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich.

The three were under investigation for allegations that they committed atrocities in Haditha, Iraq, in November 2005.

When I first wrote to you about these courageous men, they were under Article 32 investigation -- the military equivalent of a grand jury hearing.

The hysteria against these Marines was set off by a Time magazine reporter whose only sources were known insurgent propagandists, civilian supporters of al-Qaida, or civilians intimidated by al-Qaida thugs.

On the basis of the Time story alone, and despite the fact that Time was forced to retract parts of the initial story four times, the media across the world reported that the Kilo Company Marines had gone on a rampage.

The Time report claimed Marines had massacred 24 innocent civilians on Nov. 19, 2005, in retaliation for the death of one of their fellow Marines. The Marine was killed by a roadside bomb.

In response to the media charges and those echoed by Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., and a badly bungled investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS), the three heroes were falsely charged with multiple counts of murder.

When we alerted you to this grave injustice, Newsmax readers rose to the occasion. You donated more than $250,000 for the legal defense funds of these Marines.

And your help made a big difference.

At the end of the Article 32 hearings, the presiding military officer recommended strongly that all charges be dropped against the three Marines.

Sharratt was fully exonerated.

But suddenly the Pentagon ignored the findings of the military tribunal relating to Tatum and Wuterich and recommended that these Marines should face courts-martial.

Both are scheduled to go to court in March, with long jail sentences looming.

As you can imagine, the legal defense costs for these Marines have placed an enormous burden on them and their families, and have well exceeded even the $250,000 our readers have donated to their cause.

We have been informed that these Marines are in desperate need of financial resources to continue their legal struggle.

You
can help these Marines -- Go Here Now.

John McCain Addresses Terri Schiavo Debate After Barack Obama's Flip-Flop

by Steven Ertelt

March 12, 2008

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Presidential candidate John McCain addressed the debate over Terri Schiavo's euthanasia death but added little to his position other than to call the ordeal "very sad." His comments are the first since Barack Obama came under intense criticism saying he regretted supporting a bill to help her family prevent her ex-husband from killing her.

McCain addressed the debate over the disabled woman during a campaign stop last week the corporate headquarters of Chick-fil-A restaurant.

In a brief news conference following the event, Baptist Press reports that McCain called the entire situation relating to Terri "very sad" and a "great American tragedy."

"It's very sad when you see a situation such as this, it's very sad," McCain explained.

"I think just by looking at the situation it was a terrible situation and one that probably the state should have handled in retrospect," he added, according to Baptist Press. "[I]t was a very sad, sad situation and moved all of us who are -- and the plight of this situation moved every American."

Last month, Barack Obama said during a Democratic presidential debate that his biggest mistake was siding with a unanimous Senate to help save Terri Schiavo. [read more]

Catholic Prayers

A Lenten Prayer called the Passion

Dear Lord Jesus,
by Your Passion and Resurrection
You brought life to the world.
But the glory of the Resurrection
came only after the sufferings of the Passion.

You laid down Your life willingly
and gave up everything for us.
Your body was broken and fastened to a Cross,
Your clothing became the prize of soldiers,
your blood ebbed slowly but surely away,
and Your Mother was entrusted to the beloved disciple.

Stretched out on the Cross,
deprived of all earthly possessions and human aid,
You cried out to Your Father that the end had come.
You had accomplished the work given You,
and You committed into His hands,
as a perfect gift,
the little life that remained to You.

Lord, teach me to accept all afflictions
after the example You have given.
Let me place my death in Yours
and my weakness in Your abandonment,
Take hold of me with Your love,
that same foolish love that knew no limits,
and let me offer myself to the Father
with You so that I may rise with You to eternal life.

Women of Betrayal

I personally question the rationale used by women who choose to stand by these men who obviously have thrown them and their relationships "out with the garbage", so-to-speak. If you really want to do something for your children then show them that a strong person does not lie down and become a doormat, teach them it takes self respect, strength, and courage to walk away from an unhealthy relationship that has been destroyed by sin. God said turn the other cheek, to forgive; not to participate in the acceptance of an ungodly lifestyle in the face of the public.

Sure there was a long relationship, marriage and love that someone chose to throw away, but women in the public eye should not held to a higher standard that any other woman whose betrayal would be grounds to walk away and start over. Let’s be fair and realistic and allow these women to be real. God knew what this betrayal does to one’s soul, which is why it was the only reason he allowed for divorce.

Being in the public eye does not mean you are no longer human. It would be nice to see these women start standing up for themselves and their children and publicly put these men in their places. The behavior of these men is not acceptable, so let’s not put on a show like it is. Some times what is best for the children is what is best for the person who was betrayed. Your children have also been betrayed, they know it, they hurt and they feel the anger and confusion if they perceive you have accepted it. Forgive does not mean forget.

I understand this is a horrific, degrading and confusing betrayal, but these men have broken the most intimate and sacred union that a person can experience and a covenant with God. This is all the more reason it must these women (and men, lets face it women cheat too) should consider the message it sends when they publicly stand behind these cheaters. In my humble opinion it is not the right message we want to send our daughters, or our sons. I am not pushing divorce, but I am saying these women should make these men stand up by themselve and confess their sins to the public.

Why wives stand by scandal-stained husbands
It’s instinctive, says the ex-wife of New Jersey’s former governor

It was an all too familiar scene, a set piece that’s played out with metronomic regularity in American politics.

The elected official — this time the governor of New York — stands at a lectern, apologizing for a sexual indiscretion. The stoic wife, her face a mask, stands just off to his side. The viewers watch in morbid fascination, wondering how this wronged woman can appear to support her cheating rat of a spouse.

“It’s very easy for people on the outside to criticize and say, ‘I wouldn’t have been there. Why is she there? He disgraced her,’ ” Dina Matos told TODAY’s Matt Lauer on Tuesday in New York. [read more]

Fred Smith - Defending Our Borders - And New Illegal Immigration Ad

"There is a reason that people want to come to our country. America has always been a land of opportunity where with hard work and heart you can become whatever you want."

America is failing to protect our borders. In turn, we've allowed open access to our nation. While America is the beacon of freedom to the world we must also enforce the rule of law and maintain our sovereignty. While I continue to support legal immigration to this country, I have signed onto a bill that establishes the North Carolina Security and Immigration Compliance Act to provide for the comprehensive regulation of persons in this state who are not lawfully present in the United States. I also signed onto a bill that would require that voters present a photo identification document before voting; and to restrict voter registration forms to the English language except as required by federal law.

If millions of illegal immigrants can break through our borders with just hopes and dreams, I'm certain terrorists can break through our borders with the means to cause a nightmare. On the federal level, Congress needs to stop playing with flowcharts and move past bureaucratic Washington D.C. nonsense to hire more Border Patrol Agents and Immigration Enforcement Agents instead of shifting responsibility and blame from one agency to the next. At the state level, Democratic Speaker Jim Black (Ed Note: Speaker Black has since been convicted of accepting cash to influence legislation, and no longer holds this position) must take up the legislation passed by the Senate to strengthen the integrity of our drivers' licenses by immediately halting the acceptance of taxpayer ID numbers as valid forms of identification.

Catholic Church Says Abortion, Cloning, Embryo Destruction are Sinful Practices

by Steven Ertelt

March 10, 2008

The Vatican (LifeNews.com) -- The Catholic Church has added abortion and destructive bioethics practices like embryonic stem cell research and human cloning pose to the traditional list of seven deadly sins. Archbishop Gianfranco Girotti spoke with a Catholic newspaper over the weekend about the additions.

Girotti is the Catholic Church's number two official when it comes to helping Catholics understand what constitutes sin in their lives. He is the head of the Apostolic Penitentiary.

He told L'Osservatore Romano, the official Vatican newspaper, that involvement in practices that violate the dignity of human beings, such as abortion or destroying human life in scientific experiments, is sinful.

Abortion, he said, violated “the dignity and rights of women" in addition to destroying the lives of unborn children. [read more]

WASHINGTON - Prince William County's crackdown on illegal immigration could be having a chilling effect in some of the local schools.

"It certainly is an anomaly that we would have a little more than 600 fewer students in the ESOL ( English Speakers of Other Languages)program than what we had at the beginning of the year," says Prince William County school spokesman Ken Blackstone.

"We are always concerned when there's anything that would create an apparent anomaly like this, a drop in enrollment." [read more]

Editorial: Marriage under Assault at the California Supreme Court

By Deacon Keith Fournier
3/7/2008
Catholic Online (www.catholic.org)

Marriage is ontologically between a man and a woman, ordered toward the loving union of the spouses, open to life through the conjugal act in procreation. It also forms the foundation of family.

LOS ANGELES (Catholic Online) - The California Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 arising out of the consolidation of a group of cases which were filed by homosexual couples over the last four years.

The effort was strategically prepared and is clearly intended to challenge the California Sate law precluding them from obtaining marriage licenses. The Court now must decide within three months whether the California law somehow violates that State’s Constitution. The argument involves the "Equal protection" Clause of the California Constitution.

The State Challenges are a prelude to the real goal, the strategic plan to use the United States Supreme Court to redefine Marriage and then force society to recognize this new meaning under the threat of the police power of the State.

Those who support marriage as a lifelong committed relationship between one man and one woman are being pilloried in many of the press reports. Those who support marriage - as marriage – are being brushed with all the disparaging terms thrown at people who insist that there is any such a thing as objective truth in an age of moral relativism. Scientists Who Created Ethical Embryonic-Like Stem Cells Moving Forward

by Steven Ertelt
LifeNews.com Editor
March 9, 2008

Kyoto, Japan (LifeNews.com) -- The Japanese team of scientists who were one of two groups that created ethical embryonic-like stem cells are moving ahead with the process. Prof. Shinya Yamanaka, and his team of researchers who successfully discovered iPS cells, plan to create them from patients suffering from 10 different diseases.

In November, Yamanaka and American researcher James Thomson released studies in the medical journals Science and Cell about their process known as direct reprogramming.

They were able to make adult stem cells revert to their embryonic form by turning human skin cells (fibroblasts) into pluripotent stem cells sharing essentially all the features of human embryonic stem cells.

Now, Yamanaka's team is going to take cells from human patients and plans to start work as early as April on developing new treatments for diseases.

The team hopes to transform healthy cells into sick ones to replicate the process by which cells deteriorate and then reverse the process.

According to the Daily Yomiuri newspaper, they will examine diseases including juvenile diabetes, muscular dystrophy, neurodegenerating diseases and congenital anemia. Patients from Kyoto University Hospital will donate cells for use in the research. [

McCAIN DENOUNCES ANTI-CATHOLICISM;

“Sen. McCain has done the right thing and we salute him for doing so. As far as the Catholic League is concerned, this case is closed.”
