Governor Sanford Stimulus standoff

EDITOR'S NOTE:

I normally like to let these videos stand on their own, but I had to add my two cents on this. How many of us Conservatives and Libertarians have complained when politicians we help elect are either inarticulate or go weak in the knees when challenged? Here we have Gov. Sanford refusing to back down and in a very articulate way explaining it so everyone can understand where he is coming from.

All regular readers know I am a fan of the Governor's. This is why, he is a principled statesman who does not back down when he is challenged, but uses it as an opportunity to educate.

CONSCIENCE RIGHTS DEFEATED

Yesterday an amendment introduced by Sen. Tom Coburn to protect the conscience of patients and health care providers was defeated by a vote of 56-41. The amendment was proposed in light of the Obama administration’s plans to rescind the rule, which was issued in December by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), that protects the right of health care workers at federally-funded facilities to refuse to perform or be involved in medical procedures that violate their consciences.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue spoke to this issue today:

“The failure of the administration and the Senate to protect freedom of conscience is an outrageous violation of human rights and a slap in the face to Catholics and other people of faith. No one in the health care field should ever be compelled by law to perform or assist in a procedure that violates his conscience. This should be an elementary right, yet there are those who want to trespass on it.

“Francis Cardinal George, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has called upon Catholics to let the government know that conscience protections are fundamental rights of Americans. He expressed concern that reversal of the current rule ‘would be the first step in moving our country from democracy to despotism.’

“Failure to protect the right of conscience, combined with overturning the Mexico City Policy, supporting the United Nations Population Fund, funding embryonic stem cell research and nominating radical abortion rights supporter Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to be the Secretary of HHS, sends the message to Catholics that their concerns are not important.

“We implore all lawmakers to reconsider this issue with an eye toward restoring the conscience rights of health care workers.”

A.L.L. CALLS ON KS SENATORS TO STOP SEBELIUS AS CONFIRMATION POSTPONED

Washington, DC (02 April 2009) – As news emerged that Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ nomination to Health and Human Services Secretary has been postponed until the end of April, American Life League called on Kansas Senators Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts to reject the nomination.

By calling on “Senatorial Courtesy” – the longstanding Senate tradition only confirming nominees if their home-state senators approve – Sens. Brownback and Roberts may be able to reject the nomination and stop Sebelius.

"Sen. Brownback and Sen. Roberts have an unparalleled opportunity to keep the most rabidly pro-abortion governor in the nation away from our country’s healthcare," said Shaun Kenney, executive director of American Life League. “Both of these men have long claimed the title ‘pro-life,’ now is the time to prove it."

American Life League rolled out a STOP Sebelius campaign in March. Thousands of supporters signed onto a STOP Sebelius petition and were activated to contact their senators and urge them to reject the nomination.

New sources originally reported the confirmation would come Thursday night, however as calls poured into Senate offices from around the country, the Senate Finance Committee decided to push back a final vote until the end of April.

“The senators are listening to the voice of their constituents,” Kenney said. “But now this battle shifts to Sen. Brownback and Sen. Roberts. It remains in their power to reject the nomination of pro-abortion radical Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.”

American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to natural death. South Bend, IN (LifeNews.com) -- Adding insult to injury, the University of Notre Dame announced today the appointment of a new law school dean who made donations to pro-abortion candidates, including President Barack Obama. The Catholic college is already under intense criticism for inviting Obama to give its commencement speech.

On Wednesday, Notre Dame officials announced that Nell Jessup Newton, most recently chancellor and dean of the Hastings College of the Law at the University of California, has been appointed [

Update from the House Republican Study Committee (RSC)

Do We Really Want Bureaucrats Running Our Health Care?

RSC Media Activity
Every week, Republican Study Committee members work hard to ensure that the conservative viewpoint is well-represented in all corners of the media.

· Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05): “The Geithner ‘Plan,’” by David Freddoso; National Review Online, March 23.

· Rep. Jeb Hensarling (TX-05): “Stop Using Taxpayers’ Money;” USA Today, March 24.

· Rep. Mary Fallin (OK-05): “The Gun Control Crowd is Back;” Edmond Life, March 24.

· Rep. Michelle Bachmann (MN-06): “Robbing Peter to Pay Peter?” Washington Times, March 26.

· Rep. Steve King (IA-05): “Johnson’s Radical Views Will Alienate Pro-Life Americans;” Townhall, March 26.

· Rep. J. Gresham Barrett (SC-03): “Practice What You Preach;” Greenville News, March 26.

· Rep. Spencer Bachus (AL-06): “Examine Other Alternatives for Financial Rescue;” USA Today, March 27.

RSC Legislative Activity
RSC members have made it a priority to introduce productive, conservative alternatives to the Democrats’ reckless agenda.

· RSC Chairman Tom Price (GA-06) and RSC Budget and Spending Taskforce Chairman Jim Jordan (OH-04) sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calling for her to allow all appropriations to be considered in an open and transparent manner.

· Chairman Price, Congressman Wally Herger (CA-02) and Tuesday Group Co-Chairmen Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Charles Dent (R-PA) sent a letter to President Obama and newly-confirmed USTR Ron Kirk, urging the Administration to continue our nation’s history of free trade and to promptly act on the South Korea, Columbia and Panama Free Trade Agreements.

· Rep. Doug Lamborn (CO-05) is set to introduce a bill that will require a recorded vote in the House for any action taken to increase the nation’s debt limit. Rep. Lamborn’s legislation will drastically increase accountability in the budgeting process.

House Floor Activity
The following key legislation saw a vote on the House floor last week:

· The Omnibus Public Lands Management Act (H.R. 146) was brought back to the floor through a technical procedure after being previously defeated. The bill blocks exploration of important energy-producing areas by expanding the government’s control over federal lands. Passed 285-140.

The Week Ahead
The RSC analyzes every bill that comes through the House of Representatives. Here are a few Democrat proposals to advance their big-government, anti-taxpayer agenda.

· The House will consider President Obama’s $3.6 trillion budget proposal.

· House Republicans will release a budget plan that returns economic freedom to the American people through less bureaucracy, lower taxes, and sustainable economic growth.

· The House will consider the Democrats’ proposal to intrude further into the private sector and limit compensation for employees who work for companies that received TARP bailout funds.

PRO-OBAMA CATHOLIC DISRESPECTS BISHOPS

Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented today on an article by Michael Sean Winters posted on the blog site of
America
magazine:

“More and more bishops are publicly disagreeing with the decision by Notre Dame President Father John Jenkins to invite President Barack Obama to deliver the commencement address this year; Obama is also to be awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree.

“Michael Sean Winters not only disagrees with the bishops, he has written an attack piece that accuses them of ‘disrespecting’ President Obama by calling him ‘pro-abortion.’ He also accuses the bishops of being ‘out of touch’ with American culture.

“Catholics United, Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, and Catholic Democrats join Winters in promoting the fiction that Obama is not pro-abortion. Consider the following: when Obama was in the Illinois state senate he championed a bill to deny health care to a baby born alive who survived an abortion; he condemned the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court outlawing partial-birth abortion; he has already signed executive orders overturning previous orders restricting abortion; he has appointed nothing but radical pro-abortion attorneys to his administration; he has consistently received a 100 percent approval rating from NARAL, the most extreme pro-abortion group in the nation; and he has told Planned Parenthood he will sign the Freedom of Choice Act, the most dangerous pro-abortion bill ever authored.

“And yet, after all this, we are to conclude that Obama is not really pro-abortion. Worse, we are to believe that the bishops have been ‘disrespectful’ for telling the truth. Nice to know whose side Winters is on. Moreover, it is not the job of the bishops to be ‘in touch’ with the dominant culture when the conventional wisdom is morally wrong—it is their job to change it. But to Catholic journalists whose goal in life is to win the plaudits of their cohorts in secular circles, such a challenge is obviously too much to bear.”

PROGRESS MADE IN NY STATE ABUSE LAW

There are two bills before the New York State legislature dealing with the issue of amending the statute of limitations for cases involving the sexual abuse of minors. One bill, sponsored by Assemblywoman Margaret Markey, would allow those who were abused in a Catholic school a half-century ago to file suit; it would do nothing to change the privileged status of the public schools (the accused have only 90 days to file a claim). The other bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Vito Lopez, would apply equally to private and public institutions.

The Markey bill cleared an Assembly committee two weeks ago by a vote of 11-8. Yesterday, the Lopez bill passed by a margin of 18-1.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented as follows:

“While this issue is not over, what happened yesterday was a victory for those who want equal justice for private and public institutions. The big losers are those who want to discriminate against Catholic and Jewish schools while insulating the public schools.

“The losers include SNAP, a professional victims’ advocacy organization greased by steeple-chasing lawyers; attorneys who stand to profit from soaking the Catholic Church like Irwin Zalkin; attorneys who have a vested ideological interest in milking the Catholic Church like Marci Hamilton, a professor of law at Yeshiva University; and newspapers with an animus against Catholicism like
Newsday and the New York Times
.

“Those who support the Markey bill argue that her bill would apply equally to Catholic and public schools. They are wrong, and it isn’t a matter of opinion: in California, when a bill similar to Markey’s was passed, victims of public school abuse were turned away. Those who lost yesterday know this, but it doesn’t matter. That’s because they don’t believe in a level playing field.”

Gov. Jindal: Furthering Economic Development

Our state’s economy continues to outperform the national economy, as evidenced by the facts that we were the only state in the country to add jobs in December of last year and February of this year and the only state whose unemployment rate went down in January. The Obama's Diss The Queen With iPod As Gift

If you want to destroy a nation you do it from within and sever it from its allies. If Obama's are not intentional plants then they have a deep seeded contempt for the UK and the US and have every intent on annulling the relationship between them.

The first time the Obama's dissed Britain with an inappropriate gift they got away with it by claiming they didn't know any better. Since there is staff in place to make sure these types of gaffs do not happen we know better. After Obama disgraced America the first time you can be sure he was educated what an appropriate gift would be.

This time there is no excuse and no cover; as if they really think the Queen can't get her own iPod. The Obama's have an obvious aversion for our ally and they are intent on not hiding it.

Founding Fathers Quote

But as the plan of the convention aims only at a partial union or consolidation, the State governments would clearly retain all the rights of sovereignty which they before had, and which were not, by that act, EXCLUSIVELY delegated to the United States.

OBAMA NOMINEE’S CATHOLIC PROBLEM

In a few weeks, the Senate will vote on the nomination of Dawn Johnsen to be assistant attorney general in charge of the Office of Legal Counsel. Catholic League president Bill Donohue says the Catholic community should be given a heads up:

“As past staff counsel for the ACLU and legal director of NARAL (the most extreme pro-abortion group in the nation), Dawn Johnsen has done more than consort with the enemies of Catholicism—she has actively sought to undermine the Catholic Church.

“In the late 1980s, Johnsen worked on a lawsuit,
United States Catholic Conference v. Abortion Rights Mobilization
, that sought to strip the Catholic Church of its tax exempt status; she helped to prepare briefs securing standing for the plaintiffs. Thus, she is not simply a critic of the Catholic Church’s pro-life position—she wants to cripple the institution.

“Most Americans are repelled at the thought of a doctor jamming a scissors into the head of a baby who is 80 percent born. But not everyone. For example, Johnsen calls the term partial-birth abortion ‘intentionally provocative,’ but there is no evidence that she has ever described this hideous procedure that way.

“As soon as President Clinton took office in 1993, he took the occasion to sign five executive orders overturning abortion restrictions. Dawn Johnsen wrote every one of them. But it is more than abortion rights that motivates her—she wants to punish the Catholic Church.

“U.S. bishops strongly oppose the Freedom of Choice Act, a law so draconian that if it were enacted (Obama has said he will sign it) it could force Catholic hospitals to start performing abortions or have their funding pulled. Who helped to write this bill? Dawn Johnsen.

“To say that Johnsen has a Catholic problem is a monumental understatement.”
