McKinney: Liberty will advance with Ovide as governor

McKinney: Liberty will advance with Ovide as governor

November 1, 2012

As the leader of a Republican organization focused on liberty in New Hampshire, I often come across people who refuse to go along with the party nominee in higher-end races and vote their conscience instead.

A vote on principle is certainly something of value and thankfully common among people who truly understand what liberty means. At the same time, it’s important for liberty-minded Republicans and independent-minded voters out there to consider that no person can possibly agree with them on every subject. For that reason, voting on principle sometimes requires a little more deliberation, especially in this election when the momentum of liberty counts so much on the results.

There is no doubt that Gov. John Lynch was a barrier to liberty in the last two years, despite the Republican supermajorities in the House and Senate. Right to Work would be law today, guaranteeing the freedom of individuals to earn money wherever they could find an employer willing to hire them, and they wouldn’t have to share their wealth against their will with a third-party. New Hampshire would no longer be a member of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a tax scheme with no real benefit to the environment that has made a few connected businessmen wealthy at the expense of everyone else.

Election Saturation And A Look At The Senate

The Republicans are mounting the most impressive voter outreach effort I have ever witnessed. In the last two days alone, I have received ten phone calls and seven mailings encouraging me to get out and vote or to support a Republican candidate somewhere on the ballot. Between the recall, the Senate primary, and the general election the number of phone calls and mailings is truly impressive. If we turn out our voters, there is no reason for Wisconsin not to go red again.

I am convinced, if people turn out and vote, that we are headed towards an electoral win in the 345 range. That will only happen if we don't take our vote for granted. Every vote matters, please do not assume a victory and not vote. I have worked for a campaign where we lost by 19 votes. There is no such thing as a sure win.

A lot of Libertarian-leaning individuals, like myself, have issues with Mitt Romney and the Republican leadership. We are going to have to keep them honest, but there is no denying that the country would be much better off under Romney's leadership.

If we are to repeal Obamacare, cut spending, reign in the federal overreach, and get Constitutional judges confirmed to the Supreme Court, we have to take the Senate back. As history has shown us, all-to-often, you have to have 60 votes in the Senate to get anything meaningful done. There is the ability to get to 60 Republican senators this election, but it will take every ounce of energy we have from now until election day to promote and support our Senate candidates.

Here in Wisconsin we have the chance to elect Tommy Thompson, which would be a pick up. Here is a good list of all the seats up for election. Don't buy into the false narrative that we can only pick up a net of three to six seats. A pick up that small, in this environment, would have to be considered a failure by the party. After this election, in 2014, the Democrats will have more Senate seats up for election again. Including in red states, like Alaska and Louisiana; in the 2012 and 2014 elections we could really run up our Senate totals and get some real progress made for once. We must not squander our opportunities. Starting in 2016 it will be the Republican Party with the most seats up for election so let's strike while the iron is hot.

The BrahMos Cruise Missile And India's Conitnued Emergence

The BrahMos anti-ship cruise missile is a huge step forward for India and as this worthwhile article shows a potential challenge for the U.S. and China.  It is impressive to see how fast India, through domestic and foreign equipment, is turning into a first rate military power.  Considering some of their neighbors are Iran, Pakistan, and China, you can see why a first rate military would be a priority.

I have thought for many years that the U.S. should have a better and closer relationship with India.  It would be of great benefit to both nations as India modernizes and the U.S. seeks to expand trade and counter China.

Founding Fathers Quote

If, from the more wretched parts of the old world, we look at those which are in an advanced stage of improvement, we still find the greedy hand of government thrusting itself into every corner and crevice of industry, and grasping the spoil of the multitude. Congressman Ellison sends message to Vets: Thanks For Nothing!

This past Sunday we taped the KSTP debate with Tom Hauser. During the debate Congressman Keith Ellison demonstrated he has no clue of what it means to be a veteran nor does he understand the key reasons why veterans sacrifice so much to serve our country.

According to Ellison and his campaign staff, wearing a military uniform for the United States is the equivalent of doing nothing for local communities. That line of thinking is just pure dumb and they continue to say it over and over again on social media sites like Twitter because they are clueless.

US Federal Regulations Pose Obstacle to Energy Outlook, Economy | Louisina Oil & Gas Association

The United States’ unconventional shale plays have begun to transform the nation’s economy and energy future. But that transformation can only continue as long as the U.S. federal government doesn’t get in the way, said government and industry officials at the Consumers Energy Alliance-Texas 2012 Energy & Jobs Forum Wednesday in Houston.

The number of jobs in the U.S. oil and gas sector has grown as other industries have shed jobs in the economic recession. However, the U.S. federal government has launched a war on oil, gas and coal of the likes not seen previously, with the administration seeking to eliminate tax incentives not only for major oil and gas companies but independents as well, said U.S. House of Representative member Kevin Brady (R-Texas).

“Taxing U.S. energy companies at home as if they are working overseas will deter future energy development, reduce American made production and result in jobs being shipped overseas,” Brady said.

Sean Lansing Named Communications Director For MacIver Institute

MacIver Institute has shown itself to be a leading source of information for Wisconsin and it is exciting to see they are adding new talent. The Eric Hovde campaign was one of the most efficiently run campaigns in years who knew how to utilize new media; in a way too few campaigns do.  Sean Lansing will, no doubt, be a benefit to the MacIver Institute.  Congratulations to Sean on his new position.

MacIver Institute Expands

[Madison, Wisc...] The John K. MacIver Institute for Public Policy has named Sean Lansing as Communications Director. Lansing, a 2008 UW-Madison graduate, has held numerous positions at the state Capitol and on political campaigns, including stints with the Assembly Majority Leader and Eric Hovde's campaign for US Senate.

"We're excited to bring Sean on board," said Brett Healy, MacIver Institute President. "He will play a crucial role in publicizing the public policy research and investigative reporting that has become a hallmark of MacIver's work in Wisconsin."

Brian Fraley, MacIver's Communications Director since the Institute's founding in 2009, has been named a Senior Fellow for the Institute. Fraley was recently named the Managing Editor of RightWisconsin.com.

"We are happy for Brian and the new opportunity before him," said Healy. "I'm pleased he remains a part of our efforts here at MacIver and all of us are excited about what the future holds."

The John K. MacIver Institute for Public Policy is a Wisconsin-based think tank that promotes free markets, individual freedom, personal responsibility and limited government.
