SASEBO, Japan (NNS) -- The Commanding Officer of USS Germantown (LSD 42) was relieved March 7 by Rear Adm. Hugh Wetherald, Commander, Amphibious Force Seventh Fleet.

Cmdr. Jason Leach was relieved due to loss of confidence in his ability to command. The relief was not related to a single incident but was the result of a poor command climate onboard the ship and the Commanding Officer's failure to use the good judgment expected of leaders in the Navy and uphold standards

There are no plans for disciplinary action against Cmdr. Leach.

Cmdr. Leach has been reassigned to the staff of Expeditionary Strike Group Seven in Sasebo.

The current Deputy Commodore of Amphibious Squadron Eleven, Capt. Marvin E. Thompson, will assume duties as the Commanding Officer until a relief can be identified. Capt. Thompson is a former Commanding Officer of USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) and former CTF 76 Deputy Chief of Staff.
